General Meeting: Fellowships

ASA Student Chapter General Meeting

Friday, SEPT 9 at 3 PM in ETC 4.150

Hey everyone!

I hope that you have all been able to settle into the semester and are making progress toward whatever your goals may be.

This week, our ASA meeting will be focused on national fellowships (NSF, NDSEG, Hertz, etc.). Dr. Tehrani and the ME department held a seminar last week on this topic, so hopefully this will act as a filler for those of you who were not able to make it and are interested in applying.

A few other details:

  • Dr. Karl Fischer (Executive Director, ARL:UT) will be giving the Texas Acoustics seminar this week after the ASA student chapter meeting. If you are unfamiliar with ARL and its relationship to our acoustics program, this is a great opportunity to learn!
  • Dr. Steve Garrett is scheduled for an “Ask me anything” on Sept 23. Dr. Garrett is a pioneer in many aspects of acoustics and has won multiple awards for environmental technology. He has held faculty positions and national fellowships, received many patents, and written an acoustics textbook. Please think of any questions you might want to ask Dr. Garrett and if you are not comfortable asking, feel free to send them to me and I will start compiling a list of questions to ask.

As always, if there are any questions/comments/concerns please let me know!

General Meeting: Stuff You Should Know

ASA Student Chapter General Meeting

Friday, AUG 26 at 3 PM in ETC 4.150

Hello everyone,

I hope you are all feeling the energy that comes from the start of a new semester!

Our first meeting will be this Friday (Aug. 26) at 3 PM in ETC II 4.150.  We will do introductions and a “Stuff You Should Know” presentation that will help you navigate some of the practical aspects of being a graduate student here at UT.

I am excited to announce the formation of committees within the ASA student chapter. These committees will each have a specific focus and work to streamline some of the core duties of the student chapter.  The committees will be:

Outreach Committee: This committee will facilitate the outreach activities done by the chapter, including Girl Day / Explore UT Day, our annual tour with Austin International School, development of acoustics demos, and other educational activities that come up. Will, our Vice-Chair, will be the head of this committee.

Social Committee: This committee will facilitate the social activities for the chapter. This includes what will be our fourth annual inaugural acoustics tailgate and other outings that we do as a chapter, such as BBQ outings, sporting events, or other extracurricular activities. Matthew, our Secretary, will be the head of this committee.

If you are interested in any of these, please consider signing up at the chapter meeting. This will be a great way for you to get experience with the chapter and see how things work, especially if you might want to be an chapter officer in the future! We also plan on making shirts with this year. I’d like to thank Tyler for taking the lead on this project and encourage anyone with an interest in design to meet up with Tyler at the meeting.

See you Friday!

ISNA 2022 Recap

ISNA 2022 Recap

Students from the UT Austin Acoustics program recently had the opportunity to take a trip “across the pond” for the 22nd International Symposium on Nonlinear Acoustics (ISNA) held in Oxford, England. Several students presented their work on projects related to nonlinear acoustics, with full abstracts available in the ISNA symposium program. A list of student abstracts is also provided below:

Alicia Casacchia et al. – “Toward material characterization using multibubble sonoluminescence”
Chirag Gokani et al. – “Born approximation of acoustic radiation force used for acoustofluidic separation”
Thomas Jerome et al. – “Born approximation of acoustic radiation force and torque”
Brittany McCollom et al. – “Modeling of nonlinear torsional wave propagation in a thin circular rod with Lagrangian
mechanics”
Blake Simon et al. – “Acoustic radiation force on objects near boundaries”
William Willis et al. – “Measurement and visualization of coalescence resulting from two nonlinear spherical
wavefronts intersecting in air”
