BOEM: Acoustic Modeler (2nd Advertisement)

Job Opportunity at the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management

Hello all,

Please see the following info about a job opportunity in underwater acoustic modeling at BOEM. Note the relatively close due date. This position is open to US citizens only and is located in Sterling, Virginia. In addition to contacting BOEM directly with any questions, Matt Zeh (mzeh@utexas.edu) has offered to answer questions about the application process.

Best of luck!
Alicia

BOEM is advertising a second time for underwater ACOUSTIC MODELERS but under a Direct-Hire Authority (DHA). The DHA enables an agency to hire, after public notice is given, any qualified applicant without regard to competitive rating and ranking, veterans’ preference, and “rule of three” procedures. We encourage applicants who applied in August 2020 to consider reapplying under this announcement.

See the link below for more information and instructions to apply. Note that the positions can be filled as an engineer or physical scientist. We are considering applicants at GS-11, 12 and 13 levels under the DHA. Closing date to apply is October 27, 2020. As per U.S. Federal government requirements, the position is only open to U.S. citizens. Also, be sure any resume submitted clearly shows the experience and education required in the job announcement.

BOEM is a small agency with a big mission and a fantastic group of colleagues. The underwater Acoustic Modelers will join BOEM’s new Center for Marine Acoustics (CMA). When fully built, the CMA will develop in-house, customized underwater acoustic models and ecological risk assessment frameworks for the sources we regulate (e.g., related to offshore energy and minerals mining). It will target priority science gaps, drive policy development, and improve how BOEM communicates acoustic impact risk to all stakeholders. It will also partner with domestic and international organizations addressing these same issues.
