We have an opening for an Environmental Test Lab Engineer II. This is a hands-on position, where the selected Engineer will work alongside Engineers & Technicians in daily support and testing coordination for emerging and production programs. The role will oversee the development and execution of complex tests and be challenged to drive results alongside a larger highly qualified technical team. Engineers whom do well in this role, exhibit strong teamwork, technical curiosity and an assertive approach towards technical problems.

You Must Have:

  • US Citizenship required in order to obtain and maintain US Department of Energy Q-level security clearance
  • Bachelor of Science degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program or bachelors of science degree in Physics from an accredited program
  • Two (2) or more years of relevant experience in engineering or related technical activities
  • Graduate degree is a plus

Opportunities in the UT Austin Smart Structures Research Group

The UT Austin Smart Structures Research Group (SSRG) is accepting applications for a PhD student as well as a postdoc for Spring 2022. Please see the descriptions for both positions below.


Postdoctoral Researcher Position
Postdoc position opening in ultrasonic sensing systems, particularly in the context of nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring. Applicants are expected to have experience and background in wave mechanics and signal processing. The research will focus on developing a sensing system for the inspection and monitoring of dry cask storage systems used in nuclear power plants.

Responsibilities: i) perform state-of-the-art research in ultrasonic sensing methods for damage detection and characterization in metallic structures (including software development and modeling of wave-propagation phenomena); ii) develop new research plans and co-author research proposals; iii) supervise and train undergraduate or graduate students; iv) author professional presentations, professional reports, and publications; and v) present research at professional conferences.

Qualifications: i) a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field; ii) demonstrated ability to conduct original research as evidenced by high-quality journal publications; iii) outstanding English language oral and written communication skills; iv) a strong work ethic with the ability to work independently as well as in a research group; and vi) evidence of good project/laboratory management skills.

Compensation includes a competitive stipend based on the candidate’s experience. Initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of extension based on funding and the direction of the research.

Prospective Ph.D. student
Ph.D. students will address specific problems within the areas of structural health monitoring (SHM), nondestructive evaluation (NDE), ultrasonic sensing methods for smart structures, wave propagation in solids, digital signal/imaging processing and pattern recognition. Ph.D. student candidates are expected to have a solid research experience in Mechanical Engineering and have a M.S. or equivalent degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics. Compensation includes full tuition coverage and a competitive stipend.
