Dr. William Willis gave a graduate skills seminar on machine learning at the Student Chapter meeting on Friday, November 14th, 2025. Dr. Willis discussed how to use MATLAB’s Deep Learning and Statistics and Machine Learning toolboxes to perform regressions on data. Many current graduate students in acoustics attended the seminar and followed along on their laptops.
Dr. Willis is an alumnus of the UT acoustics program, where he was co-supervised by Drs. Charles Tinney and Mark Hamilton. In spring 2024, Dr. Willis defended his dissertation, Coalescence of Nonlinear Acoustic Waves, with Application to Supersonic Jet Noise, part of which used machine learning to study nonlinear acoustic wave phenomena. Dr. Willis is currently a postdoctoral scholar at the Applied Research Laboratories, where he works with Drs. Samuel Wallen and Michael Haberman on solving problems related to acoustic metamaterials using machine learning.
