ACOUSTICS RESEARCH ENGINEER

The NASA Langley Research Center, Hampton, VA is seeking to fill a research position in acoustics. The successful candidate will join a team dedicated to analytical, numerical and experimental research focused on the development of scientific understanding of the potential impact of sonic booms from future commercial supersonic aircraft. The results of this research are critical to a potential change to the rules that prohibit overland supersonic flight.  There is particular concern with spatial and temporal variation in sonic boom levels that are caused by atmospheric conditions, ground terrain, and aircraft maneuvers.

The position requires a thorough knowledge of physical acoustics, including sound generation and propagation, signal processing, and acoustical measurement techniques. Familiarity with existing sonic boom propagation methods (analytical and numerical) and codes, as well as sonic boom measurement techniques, is desired.

Computational, laboratory, and flight-testing capabilities at NASA are available for this work.

The candidate will need to be self-motivated and have the ability to clearly present research results in both technical and non-technical settings.  The candidate will work as part of a team located in the Structural Acoustics Branch at the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton Virginia.  Since this is a civil service position, U.S. citizenship is required.

Requirements:

  • MS or PhD degree or equivalent in field of engineering or physical sciences
  • Experience and/or training in acoustics including atmospheric sound propagation modeling
  • Experience and/or training in acoustic data acquisition and signal processing
Desired skills:
  • Familiarity with atmospheric non-linear acoustic propagation
  • Familiarity with sonic boom propagation codes and methods
  • Familiarity with sonic boom measurement methods

Applications should be made before July 5 at USAjobs:
